PRISON / JAIL PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA

Eastern State Penitentiary Featured

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

A pioneering radial prison built around solitary confinement, now a preserved ruin and museum.

History

Eastern State introduced a system of isolation meant to inspire penitence, which critics argued drove prisoners to madness. After more than a century it closed and stood abandoned before reopening for tours. Its crumbling cellblocks are among the most investigated places in the country, with reports of shadow figures and voices in the long corridors.

Reported phenomena

Shadow figures in the cellblocks, laughter, and footsteps in empty corridors.
